Procedures routinely carried out at Kelina Hospital

Traditional Minimal Access procedures for the prostate has been Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). In Kelina Hospital, we have been carrying out bipolar TURP since 2011. TURP is better than open surgery because there is less bleeding and there is no wound on the body after surgery. Kelina Hospital has two machines for bipolar TURP. Our Autocon III was the first in Africa when we bought it. Typically, patients stay in the hospital for 3days after surgery, if they are to go home without catheter.

For patients with prostate problems disturbing urine flow, Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is the new thing in town.

Our 120 watts Laser, Moses Technology can perform advanced surgical procedures in a short time. Patients can have surgery today and go home today or tomorrow.

With our new 120 watts Laser, the Moses Technology, we can take out large kidney stones in a short time, a process called Laser Lithotripsy. In one procedure we recently carried out, the entire staghorn stone was pulverized in just 30 minutes.

We have been doing Laser Lithotripsy since 2011. Although we have always used Holmium Laser, this is a new device we just installed; a more powerful laser that can do HoLEP, Lithotripsy as well as other laser-based gynaecological, general surgical and orthopaedic procedures. this is the first Moses Technology Laser in Africa!

HoLEP procedure can take out prostates of any size, unlike TURP, which is what has always been available in Nigeria before now. Between October 2018 and November 2019, we did 46 HoLEP procedures, all of them successful. Almost all the patients left the hospital within 24 hours of surgery.

Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP):

This is the most effective way of taking out the prostate if it is obstructing urine flow or causing damage to the kidneys. Patients can go home same day or next

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) for Kidney Stones:

RIRS is an endoscopic procedure for kidney surgery. It can be combined with laser lithotripsy to take out kidney stones without any wound on the body. Patients can go home same day or next
